When someone calls locked out, the most useful thing we can offer is calm. The door will open. The keys will be replaced. Nothing about the situation is unusual to us, even if it feels like a disaster to you. We talk you through what will happen, ask you to have some proof that the place or the vehicle is yours ready for when we arrive, and then get on with it without fuss. Once you are inside, we ask whether anything else should be looked at while we are there: a spare key, a rekey if the set is truly lost, a latch that has been sticking. Emergencies are also a chance to prevent the next one.

• A look before a verdict. We inspect the door, frame and lock before suggesting anything. Diagnosing from the driveway is how people end up with parts they did not need.

• Two or three real choices. Where there are sensible alternatives we explain them side by side, including the option of doing less than you expected.
