Understanding your locks

A door that drags, a key that needs a jiggle, a fob that works from closer than it used to. Each is a small signal worth understanding. Our advice pages explain what those signals mean and how to act on them before they become a lockout.

Will opening the door damage my lock?

In most residential lockouts the lock is untouched. Picking, decoding and latch tools operate the mechanism the same way your key does, so there is nothing to repair afterwards. A drill only appears when a cylinder is seized, plugged by a snapped key or engineered against picking, and you hear about that before it starts. Should it come to that, replacement hardware goes on before the locksmith leaves so you lock up normally that evening. Home Lockout Service

We need to open for customers. How do you sequence the visit?

Entry comes first and repairs second. Once authority is confirmed the door is opened, staff go in and start their routine, and the locksmith turns to the cause: extracting a broken key, rekeying for a lost one, re-springing a deadlatch or lifting a dropped door. Anything that can wait for a quieter hour, such as rekeying interior doors, is offered as a return visit so the shop floor is not blocked while it trades. Business Lockout Service

What lubricant should I use on the lock afterwards?

Whatever the lock's own maker specifies, since cylinders differ: many call for a dry graphite or PTFE spray blown into the keyway and worked in with the key, once or twice a year, while others prohibit graphite and specify their own product instead. General-purpose oils, grease and sprays feel smooth at first but on most cylinders collect dust and clog the pins, which leads back to the sticking that breaks keys. A little goes a long way; too much of any lubricant can also hold moisture. Broken Key Extraction

My car was stolen with the garage remote and a house key inside. What now?

Treat it as two exposures. The house key is handled by rekeying every lock it fits. The remote is handled at the garage door opener: its memory is erased so every old remote stops working, and new remotes are programmed. If the car had your address on its paperwork, do both before anything else. A locksmith can rekey the doors and, on many openers, clear the remotes during the same visit or show you the learn button on the motor unit. Break-In Damage Lock Repair

Change or Rekey Locks

What happens to my old keys?

They become ordinary pieces of brass. Once the cylinders are pinned to the new combination, the old keys turn nothing on your property, so there is no security reason to keep or hide them. Hand them to the locksmith for disposal or drop them in the metal recycling. If a former roommate or contractor still has one, it no longer matters, which is the whole reason for the visit. Keep only the new set, counted and tagged. Lock Rekeying

How high above the knob does the deadbolt go?

The usual position is 140 to 150 mm above the centre of the knob, which lines the two locks up and keeps both within one reach. Manufacturers' templates assume that spacing, which helps a later keypad or handleset line up, though many handlesets still need their own lower hole drilled to that model's template. The height is nudged if it would land on glass, a decorative panel or a hollow spot inside an insulated door, and to make sure the frame behind it is solid. Deadbolt Installation

Can you match the new lock to my other door hardware?

Yes. Manufacturers make deadbolts, handlesets, knobs and levers in matching finishes and styles, so a replacement deadbolt can sit above your existing handle without looking like an afterthought. Bring or photograph the hardware you want to match, including the interior side, and note whether it is a warm brass, a satin nickel, an oil-rubbed bronze or a matte black. Where an exact match is not made, the locksmith suggests the closest family. Lock Replacement & Upgrade

How should I look after the lock once it is serviced?

A drop of the right lock oil into the latch and bolt once a year is plenty. If the lock has a pin-tumbler cylinder, use whatever lubricant that cylinder's maker specifies, since some take a dry graphite or PTFE product and others a specified liquid one. Try the latch and deadbolt each spring and fall; if the bolt starts to scrape, the strike wants a small adjustment before anything is strained. Keep bit keys out of a pocket where they bend. Can several employees each get their own code once the safe is open?

Many electronic locks support more than one user code, so a manager and one or more backup employees can each be set up separately during the same visit rather than sharing a single combination. A mechanical dial only holds one combination at a time, so multiple access there means agreeing who holds it and how that changes when staff do. Safe Opening & Combination Change

How do I know what rating of safe I actually need?

Start with what will be inside it. Cash, jewelry, and firearms mainly need protection from tools and time, so the burglary rating matters most. Paper records and digital backups mainly need protection from heat, so the fire rating matters most, and digital media needs a noticeably lower internal temperature than paper to survive. Many households and businesses end up choosing a unit built to both standards rather than picking just one. Safe Installation & Servicing

Why does the locksmith care so much about the strike plate?

Because that is where a kicked door fails. The bolt is strong, but it sits in a pocket in the jamb held by a thin plate and short screws, and a boot splits the wood around it. A reinforced strike or box strike fastened with three-inch screws into the wall framing spreads the blow along the frame. It is the least visible part of the upgrade and often the one that does the most. High Security Locks

What is a keying chart and why does it matter afterwards?

A keying chart is a plain list of every opening, the key group that operates it, the code stamped on those keys and the number issued. Months later it lets you answer exactly which doors a missing key opened, and it lets a locksmith add a new door to the system without changing anything else. Keep it with the key register, somewhere locked, with a copy off site. Commercial Rekeying

Can a master key system be expanded later without redesigning it?

Usually yes, if spare capacity was planned into the keying platform from the start. A new hire is normally handed a copy of the bitting their role already calls for, and a realistic new door can be pinned to accept a combination already reserved for that purpose. A system pinned to its absolute limit on day one has less room to grow, and adding a level to existing doors later can mean repinning cylinders that are already in daily use. Master Key System Design

Is a keypad code as secure as a card or fob?

A keypad code needs no card to lose, but a code shared among several people is effectively no longer individual, and a forgotten code left active is a common weak point. A card or fob tied to one named person avoids that particular issue, since it is switched off individually rather than reset for everyone at once. Many businesses use a code for general areas and a card wherever entry needs to be traceable to one person. Access Control Installation

How much force does the door need to open with?

Hardware standards set a maximum, not a target: an exit device is built to release the latch under a firm push, no more than about 15 pounds of force applied at the touchpad or crossbar, roughly the pressure of a light shove rather than a heave. That ceiling covers people who cannot lean hard into a door, so the swing stays open to anyone moving toward it under pressure. Panic & Exit Hardware

How can I avoid locking myself out of the car again?

Make one habit stick: keys go into a pocket before any door closes. Keep a spare at home or with someone nearby, and store a spare fob away from the main one. Change your fob battery every autumn before the cold arrives. If your car offers a setting that stops the doors locking with the fob inside, turn it on. Keep a photo of your vehicle permit on your phone so identification is never behind glass. Car Lockout Service

After a break-in the doors and ignition are on different keys. Can that be fixed?

Yes. When a door lock is forced and replaced, or an ignition is swapped, the car can end up needing two blades. A locksmith can rekey the replacement cylinder to match the surviving one, so a single key operates every lock again, and cut new keys to that combination. The transponder side is unchanged by the lock work, so your existing programmed keys carry on starting the car once the blades match. Car Key Replacement

What testing happens before I leave with the new key?

Every door lock, the trunk or hatch, the ignition or start button, and any remote functions are checked with the new key on its own, apart from the original, so neither key is quietly helped along by the other's signal. The vehicle is started more than once to rule out an intermittent issue, and only once both keys pass independently is the visit considered finished. Spare Car Key Duplication

Does key fob programming include cutting a mechanical key?

It can. Most proximity fobs hide a small mechanical blade inside the case for the day the battery dies or the electronics fail, and that blade is cut separately from the programming procedure, either to the vehicle's original code or matched to an existing working key. If your replacement fob arrived without a cut blade, mention it so the visit includes cutting one. Key Fob Programming
